I’ve been using WMM to edit WMV and AVI clips, but now I’d like to find a way to import higher quality MKV files without needing to convert them to wmv and avi, losing quality in the conversion.

Is there a way to import mkv files into Windows Movie Maker?

Unfortunately, no. There’s no way to import .mkv files into Windows Movie Maker.

These are the file types supported by it:

Audio files: .aif, .aifc, .aiff .asf, .au, .mp2, .mp3, .mpa, .snd, .wav, and .wma
Picture files: .bmp, .dib, .emf, .gif, .jfif, .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg, .png, .tif, .tiff, and .wmf
Video files: .asf, .avi, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and .wmv

Can’t be done. WMM was designed during the SD/ED period of filming, meaning that there isn’t any suport for MKV/Blu-ray/ISO etc. for this program. The version for Windows 7 most likely will have support for HQ/HD video. So right now your best bet is to download Adobe Premiere via Vuze and use that.
