Whats the best way to get an AVI Codec for windows media player?

I recently got a new computer but I have some videos on my external hard drive that are in AVI format and I want to get a codec that will play them on widows media player. Every free download i found thought had trojans or spyware attached to it. Can someone give me a link to the best way to get an AVI codec for WMP?

    Seriously, this will run just about anything. Also try VLC Media Player.

    if you have bittorrent you can search for “any video converter” and download , extract it.
    it can convert (as it says) (almost) all video types and it works for avi , flv , wmp , ….
